San Antonio pushes to make car break-ins a felony. Will it work?

San Antonio officials are lobbying the State Legislature to increase penalties for car burglaries, asking Gov. Greg Abbott to pass two bills that would upgrade the misdemeanor offense to a felony including for first-time offenders.

Officials hope the change deters potential suspects from breaking into vehicles, making neighborhoods safer. However, advocates and criminal justice officials say increasing criminal penalties won’t make a difference in the reported number of cars broken into.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has linked car burglaries in San Antonio to weapon trafficking— notably busting more than 200 stolen guns in August
